From Idea to Reality: The Story Behind BOSKA’s Sustainable Packaging

Sustainability is important to BOSKA. We don’t just create durable products but also environmentally friendly packaging. We have made great strides in making our packaging smarter and more sustainable. No complicated jargon—just less plastic, single-material packaging, and better recycling. Curious about how we do it? Keep reading!

100% Plastic-Free Packaging
BOSKA products used to have plastic in their packaging. Not anymore. More and more products now come in cardboard boxes. This means:

  • Less plastic waste
  • Easier recycling
  • More sustainable production

Our ultimate goal? To offer all BOSKA products in plastic-free packaging.

31% Less CO₂ Emissions
We conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to measure our impact. This study evaluates the environmental footprint of a product from raw material to arrival in our warehouse. The new packaging results in 31% less CO₂ emissions than the previous versions. Since they are made from a single material, they can be fully recycled with paper waste.

No More Plastic Windows
Older packaging for sets, such as cheese knife sets, often had a plastic viewing window. We replaced these with closed boxes featuring life-size images. Now, customers can see exactly what they’re buying—without unnecessary plastic.

Less Empty Space, More Impact
Some packaging has had a complete makeover. Take the Monaco+ Dark Cheese Knife Set—instead of a large box, it now comes in a sleek, compact tube. This saves space, reduces empty packaging volume, and makes gift-giving even more fun.

Smarter Transport, Lower CO₂ Emissions
For larger products, such as fondue sets, we didn’t just remove plastic—we also optimized packaging size. This allows more products to fit on a pallet, reducing CO₂ emissions from transport.

Beautiful & Sustainable Packaging
Sustainability isn’t our only focus—appearance and convenience matter too. The matte finish and smart designs make products highly visible in stores without needing to open the packaging. This helps prevent damage and returns. They’re true eye-catchers!

How Did We Develop These Sustainable Packages?
Creating plastic-free packaging was a years-long process. Junior Product Developer Domino, who has been involved since 2021, shares:
"This project took time, but persistence paid off. From the first ideas in 2020 to the launch in 2024—every step brought us closer to a more sustainable solution."

Timeline of Sustainable Packaging Development

  • 2020 Q2: Research into plastic-free packaging began. Early ideas didn’t work well yet.
  • 2022 Q4: New designs and prototypes were created and tested.
  • 2023 Q2-Q3: Factories produced test models, which were trialed by retailers. Their feedback led to improvements.
  • 2023 Q4: A standard packaging model was developed, and the first production order was placed.
  • 2024 Q2: The first collection of plastic-free packaging arrived.
  • 2025 Q1: All new production orders will use sustainable packaging.

What Happens to Old Packaging?
Why are there still old packaging versions in stores? We don’t waste anything! Older packaging will be sold first before we fully transition to the new plastic-free alternatives.

The Future: Less Paper Waste
We keep innovating. One future idea? Double-sided printed packaging, reducing the need for extra leaflets and manuals. This will make our packaging even more sustainable.
